Kimberly Koo
Kimberly Koo is a rising junior at Brooklyn Technical High School. She is the founder of That Kid Can Write, a nonprofit that teaches creative writing to kids; the co-founder & Editor in Chief of Mangosteen Magazine and is the Arts & Entertainment Editor of her school’s newspaper, The Survey. She has also been honored by multiple writing awards, most notably, Scholastic Art & Writing.
Fostering Creativity Through Accessible Writing Lessons
That Kid Can Write is a non-profit youth organization founded by NYC teens who share a passion for writing and for sharing that passion with the next generation. Our mission is to make creative writing more accessible by opening doors to free, meaningful learning experiences and encouraging young writers to build confidence in their own voices. In a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, we aim to center creativity, imagination, and authentic expression by offering online writing courses on Zoom to students ages 6-12 for free!

An Immersive & Optimal Way on Learning How To Write
01 Introduction to Storytelling
What makes a good story? Basics of syntax & writer's voice. Becoming comfortable in your writing. What are some ways to get a reader to stay? Genre study: horror, mystery, fantasy, etc.
02 World Building & Literary Techniques
How can we utilize literary elements to build the world our story revolves around? Exploring narration & plot structure. Using figurative language to make a story come to life.
03 Edit & Publish
Finally, at the end of all drafts, you must edit your story. Includes teaching grammatical techniques, revision process & identifying plot holes within the story. Publish your finished short story onto our website!
